Fred Martinez was a 16 year old Navajo boy who was also a girl. In an earlier era, he would have been revered by the Navajo people. Filmmaker Lydia Nibley explores the cultural context behind the tragic and senseless murder of Fred Martinez. Martinez was part of an honored Navajo tradition - the 'nadleeh', or 'two-spirit', who possess a balance of both masculine and feminine traits. Through telling Martinez's story, Nibley reminds us of the values that America's indigenous peoples have long embraced.
“A gorgeous, moving, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting story, the kind of film that opens the mind and heart so wide they can never close as tightly again.” Martha Beck, Oprah Magazine columnist and best-selling author. 54 minutes. All Regions. Many of our Canyon Record's artists provide the music on this program.
