Lakota Traditions

Lakota singing has a nasal quality with high pitches and frequent falsettos. Songs are divided into two parts, the second repeated before returning to the beginning of the song. the traditional song utilize words and texts found in sweat lodge, Sun Dance and pipe songs that have become the most popularized definitive standards of the inter-tribal movement. Many traditional songs such as the Rabbit Dance have been adopted by other nations, as well as becoming the basis for much of the pow wow repertoire such as the Sneak Up Dance or Victory Songs. Much of the regalia for traditional dancers was derived from warrior society object such as the eagle feather bustle.
