Dr. Richard W. Payne is one of the foremost authorities on the Native American flute. Since the 1930’s when he spent time with Belo Cozad, Abel Big Bow and Richard Foolbull, Dr. Payne has amassed not only great knowledge of the instrument but the largest privately owned collection of flutes in the world. In this video narrated by Tom Bee of SOAR, Dr. Payne speaks of the construction, history and use of this ancient instrument. He is best known as the person to give Doc Tate Nevaquaya (seen and heard on the video) his first flute and working closely with him on the uses of the the Plains flute thereby launching its renaissance. Most notable on this video is rare footage never before seen dating back to 1892. The video was edited from 70 hours of footage and hundreds of photographs. Share this rare glimpse into the immense knowledge and wisdom of this historian. R. Carlos Nakai, Mary Youngblood, Douglas Spotted Eagle , Nino Reyes, Elmer Running, Michael Graham Allen, O. W.
