If you think all contemporary Native American music is synthesizers and chanting then give a good long listen to Inuit singer-songwriter, Susan Aglukark's "Blood Red Earth" on the eclectic Arbor Records label. A slick production and razor-sharp studio musicians boost Aglukark's smooth vocals to the heights of any mainstream pop star on the charts. The arrangements and conceptual ideas for the recording are well thought out and superbly executed. Track four, is a classical piece used as a bridge to track five, "As Only A Heart Would Dare" which begins with a beautiful rendition of "Amazing Grace" in Aglukark's native language, then moves effortlessly into an original song then changes once again with the Oratory Children's Choir of Toronto singing "Amazing Grace" in English with Aglukark singing her song over layed on their vocals. It's so good we divided the track up into two parts! Although most of us in the United States have never heard of Susan Aglukark this is her sixth album and she’s a three time Juno winner in Canada, the equivalent to our Grammy awards. She’s also a motivational speaker and spends much of her time involved in helping Aboriginal youth and conducts self-esteem workshops and has performed for international dignitaries and received several honors from the Canadian government. Aglukark will gain many new fans from this terrific new recording.
