To the Lakota people, the drum holds the spirit of ever-present natural energy. The drum lives as the heartbeat of the Lakota. There are four circles surrounding the beat of the heart. The drum is the First Circle; a sacred element which commands deep respect. The rhythm we all dance to comes from the sacred drum. The men sitting around the drum make up the Second Circle and bring forth life. The Third Circle is the Wicaglata; the women singers. The Lakota people believe that women add power to their music. This particular collection of traditional and recently composed Lakota songs can only be described as forceful and stirring. There is an earthy, raw quality to The Third Circle that makes for truly compelling listening. Sissy Goodhouse and a variety of other singers and drummers provide us with hypnotic renditions using nature sounds and some spoken word. Her voice is haunting and mild; clear and sad at times.
