Pura Fe (Tuscarora) has found a home among the fine acoustic musicians that flank her excellent blues vocals on this unexpected gem of an album. It opens with a 1995 jam session that sounds like Ulali but is really many members of the native communities of the Carolinas and Virginia. Her blues influences can be traced back to a childhood where her mother sang “Summertime” to her, planting the musical seeds of her daughter’s future. This is an album that grows on you with each listen. Even if you’re not a blues fan, listen to the clips we’ve picked out and you’ll hear more than pure blues. Pura Fe, stripped down to the essential singer and musician that she is; vulnerable, full of emotion, mystery and a steely strength that is tinged with a bittersweet quality, reminiscent of some of the great women blues singers of the south.
