Arbor Records' excellent Pow Wow Trail series continues with a rare look at several contemporary artists and their views on being part of the Native music scene. A new phrase has been coined by them and it's called "Pow Wow Rock." What exactly does this term mean? Robbie Robertson, the women of Ulali, Keith Secola and Buffy Saint-Marie have plenty to say. They speak about writing, performing and incorporating their traditions and political beliefs into their art. This is not a music video so don't get your hopes up for a concert. But if you're a fan of even one of these artists it's worth the modest price. Robbie Robertson speaks of his history with Leonard Peltier, Buffy Saint-Marie reveals her secret of composing songs with tough lyrics that come across as upbeat and the women of Ulali wax eloquent about performing together and getting lost in the beauty of the music. Interspersed with these interviews we get all too short glimpses of them performing. This is intended as an educational tool for a classroom situation but makes a fine gift for any fan of "Pow Wow Rock."
