The early 17th century was a time of great suffering for the Iroquois people (Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, Tuscarora). Many converted to Christianity in the hopes of finding salvation from the never ending strife caused by new diseases and the decimation of everything they held sacred. Even today, many church services are conducted in the native Iroquois language. Maisie and Liz Robert (identical twins) are the mother and Aunt of Joanne Shenandoah. She joins them in these quiet contemplative hymns sung in Oneida Iroquois. Familiar songs such as "Amazing Grace," "Rock of Ages," and "Nearer My God to Thee" are included in this lovely addition to our holiday selection. Winner in the Religious category at the 2004 Indian Summer Festival.
