In the early 1950's the US government breached the treaties it had made with the Six Nations Iroquois. The US Army Corps of Engineers built a massive hydro-electric dam on the Allegheny Seneca Territory. Peter LaFarge, a Native poet and musician was moved to write As Long As the Grass Shall Grow. This in turn inspired Johnny Cash to record “Bitter Tears” at the height of the folk era in the US. It was banned from commercial broadcasting stations but became an underground favorite among Native Americans and and their supporters. Joanne Shenandoah and Michael Bucher (Cherokee) pay tribute to LaFarge, Floyd Red Crow Westerman and Johnny Cash with this recording. Many of the songs can be found on Johnny Cash's “Bitter Tears” CD also found in our Contemporary music section.
