In this excellent program produced by the Oklahoma Indian Arts Council you will see the diversity of activities surrounding today’s modern pow wow. The role of each element of the pow wow circle is covered from the purpose of the drum to what is called a “giveaway” where gifting becomes an integral part of the pow wow ceremony. The different aspects of singing are illustrated so a novice can hear the differences in the head singers and different phases of a song. A great deal of the program deals with the actual dance with great footage of the dancers: War Dance, Southern Cloth, Buckskin, Jingle Dress, Ruffle Dance, Fancy Dance, Straight, Northern Traditional and Grass Dance are all explained and shown. Interspersed throughout are elders such as Howard Cozad and interviews with educators explaining the purpose of each part of the pow wow. A more extensive section contains lengthy interviews with Abe Conklin, Lillian Williams, Ronnie Harris, Tony Arkeketa, Woogie Watchataker and Harry Buffalohead. A perfect guide to the uninitiated pow wow enthusiast.
