A serious western much like Clint Eastwood’s "Unforgiven" or an old John Ford movie, "Geronimo" takes an honest look at our American history without painting stereotypes. The facts are allowed to speak for themselves and they are more than eloquent enough. The screenplay, by John Milius and Larry Gross, is sympathetic to the suffering of the Indians, but it doesn't oversell the case by presenting the Apaches as an idyllic community of spiritually superior innocents and the Army as bloodthirsty racists. A carefully developed narrative detailing the suspicions and misunderstandings between the Army and Geronimo’s warriors is laced with breathtaking action sequences shot on location in southeastern Utah. Wes Studi gives a terrific performance in the title role. Also starring are Robert Duvall, Jason Patric, Gene Hackman and a young Matt Damon.
