It is the belief of the Lakota people that the Great Spirit (Wakan Tanka) provided a way to live not only before white man's arrival but in the aftermath of as well. This is accomplished by walking the "red road" (Canku Luta) which means honoring the ceremonies and traditions that were passed down orally from the elders. Songs became the medium in which these values were shared from generation to generation. They relayed a message of harmony and balance on the earth that these singers make every effort to maintain in their personal as well as professional lives. Translations of each song are provided.
