The recording, Under an Ancient Sky is part of the reawakening of an extinct flute of North America. The ancient Anasazi flute only existed as rare artifacts in museums until Coyote Oldman's Michael G. Allen began making replicas of the 1,200 year old flutes and bringing them back to life building 400 of them since 2002.
The Anasazi flute is a rim-blown flute, like the quena or shakuhachi, is approximately 30" long, and has a narrow wooden tube with 6 finger holes creating a beautiful scale capable of multiple octaves and overtones. About 25 of these ancient flutes have been unearthed in archaeological digs around the Four Corners area of the South Western United States, the ancient homeland of the mysterious Anasazi people. Little was known about these artifacts, mostly broken and preserved with arsenic and no one was sure exactly how they were played.
The Anasazi flute is a significant musical treasure of North America and a wonderfully unexplored flute that is being received with great excitement.
