This is a two disc set from HBO Films with enough extra features to fill many nights worth of watching. Inspired by Dee Brown's acclaimed bestseller, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee begins powerfully with the Sioux triumph over General Custer at Little Big Horn. The action centers on the struggles of three characters: Charles Eastman (Adam Beach), a young, Dartmouth-educated Sioux doctor; Sitting Bull (August Schellenberg), the Lakota Chief who refuses to submit to U.S. government policies designed to strip his people of their identity, dignity and sacred land; and Senator Henry Dawes (Aidan Quinn), one of the men responsible for the government policy on Indian affairs. While Eastman and schoolteacher Elaine Goodale (Anna Paquin), work to improve life for the Sioux on the reservation, Senator Dawes lobbies President Grant for kinder Indian treatment.
Emmy Awards went to the producers for Best Made for Television Movie, Best Director to Yves Simoneau, and additional awards to the crew for sound editing and mixing, make-up, costumes, single camera editing and outstanding cinematography. Plus many additional nominations went to the actors.
A director’s commentary includes actors Adam Beach and Aidan Quinn. There’s a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film including interviews with the crew and actors and an interactive on-screen historical guide prepared by the film’s screenwriter and a photo gallery. A must for any collector.
